Is Manchester City football club set to enter the gambling industry?
Tuesday 30th December 2008
Despite losing out to a last-minute withdrawal of government support for a large-scale gambling venture in Manchester it appears that the owners of Manchester City football club are this evening looking to put together their own alternative proposal. The Abu Dhabi owners of the club are looking to take up the slack left behind when the original project was ditched leaving many in the council red-faced with rage. The council as well as the competitors for the super casino licence had spent literally millions of pounds on their proposals only to see the government back out at the last minute.
Manchester was seen by many, along with Blackpool, as one of the main recipients of the proposed increase in gambling activity in the UK. The government U-turn took many by surprise although behind-the-scenes there has been much work and progress on refloating idea. The new owners of Manchester City football club literally have money to burn and are looking for substantial investments in the UK which would complement their existing assets. Football and gambling have gone together hand in hand from many years and hopes are rising of a substantial development in the region which will bring thousands of jobs.
