Looking back at 2008 it has been a phenomenal year for the poker industry with more and more online players and jackpots which seem to be growing each and every day. While it is difficult to put together a top five of tournaments there is no doubting the number one which has to be the World Series of Poker main event which this year gave out a first prize of over $9 million. The fact that all of the final eight players became millionaires overnight is also a testament to the strength and quality of the World Series of Poker event.
The Aussie Millions has also caught much of the headlines in 2008 with an AU$1.25 million jackpot which went to Howard Lederer. Scott Nguyen was able to crack the World Series of Poker $50,000 horse event which saw professional players exposed to 5 different forms of poker in one of the toughest tests of the year. The WPT World Championships saw David Chiu take out the first prize of $3.3 million and a place in history books of poker.
The World Series of Poker Europe is perhaps the most progressive poker championship of the year having literally come from nowhere with John Juanda bagging a massive £868,000 first prize in what is set to become one of the best-known poker tournaments in the sport. We cannot wait for 2009!
