Is Michael Owen set to leave Newcastle United?

Friday 2nd January 2009

Despite releasing a statement only days ago confirming that he will at least stay until the end of the season, when he is out of contract, there is speculation this evening that Michael Owen is set for a move to Inter-Milan. The ex-Liverpool striker has been touted around a number of clubs in the premiership of late and while Newcastle United are keen to keep Owen the speculation continues.

Despite their good run in the league under new manager Joe Kinnear the Geordies are only a few points away from the relegation positions and last week's 5 – 1 home demolition by league leaders Liverpool was a serious setback. There is also speculation that star goalkeeper Shay Given could also be on his way from the club with Arsenal said to be waiting in the wings with an £8 million offer. While Newcastle are not currently one of the favourites for relegation, if they were to lose a number of their star players without replacing them they could be back in trouble.

Newcastle currently stand at 7/1 to be relegated and with West Brom and Stoke odds-on there would appear to be one place left in the bottom three. Portsmouth and Blackburn are currently favourites for this third position at odds of around 3.5/1 but the situation is changing on a regular basis with so few points between the bottom ten teams in the league.
