Why do the boring poker players always do well?

Wednesday 7th January 2009

We have all been round a poker table or played the game online when a number of "boring" players have managed to last through to the very end, often taking the top prize. While a number of players are distinctly unimpressed with this style it can be very lucrative and offer a very interesting return on your money. So why does it work so well?

The first few hands of any poker game often bring out the more risky players, those who are willing to bet big bucks on the first few hands to try and get themselves ahead of the game. Very often you will see these types of players cancel each other out leaving a more pragmatic and calmer group of players at the table. Those who are successful at poker know that you do not have to play every hand, and even if you do, you do not have to push it all the way.

As Dolly Parton once said in a song "you have got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away and know when to run". Knowing when to play your best hands, went to bluff and went to sit back and study your opponents are some of the more vital elements of a play poker’s psyche and something which is evident amongst all good poker players.
