Just a matter of hours after issuing a strongly worded criticism from Rafael Benitez regarding Alex Ferguson, Liverpool this evening dropped points at lowly Stoke with a nil nil draw. While this does still extend Liverpool's lead at the top of the table, ahead of the Manchester United and Chelsea clash tomorrow, it had been seen as an opportunity to grab three points and place maximum pressure on their opponents.
While on paper this is seen as two points dropped, many believe that Liverpool were actually lucky to walk away with a draw after a very lacklustre performance today. Even though captain Steven Gerrard came close to grabbing all the points at the end it was not to be. Liverpool are still third favourites for the premiership title and while each undefeated game is seen by many as strengthening their position they do need to start taking more points from games such as this evening’s.
The battle of Old Trafford will commence in just a few hours time with the possibility that the loser will fall too far behind the chase for the premiership title. While nothing is ever won or lost in January, no team can afford to fall too far behind.
