Can Manchester United retake pole position after Chelsea win?
Sunday 11th January 2009
Manchester United today hammered premiership title contenders Chelsea 3 - 0 in a rather one-sided Old Trafford game. The match was billed as the Clash of the Titans, and while it took some time to warm up, the latter part of the first half and the second half were very entertaining indeed. This tightly fought game hinged on a goal in first-half stoppage time and two additional goals in the second half. Even Chelsea boss Scolari was in awe of Manchester United and the way they took apart his Chelsea team, which had been undefeated for more than one calendar year.
This defeat effectively takes Chelsea out of the short-term reckoning for the championship and sees Manchester United with the chance to move one point ahead of top placed Liverpool if they win their two games in hand. Those two games will be played before Liverpool play their next premiership game and it could turn up the heat on a very tricky situation for both teams.
While today's game was no classic by any means these games never are with the top teams unwilling to give away too much space when the game is tight, although the situation changed as Chelsea needed to chase goals.
