Alex Ferguson will yet again be sitting back in his Manchester United office pleased with his victory yesterday and the fact he appears to have got under the skin of Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez. His counterpart on the Mersey has today been in the press suggesting that Manchester United chief executive David Gill has a conflict of interests when considering his position within the Football Association and his high elevation at Manchester United.
This move to publicise the point, which has never been kept secret, has opened up the Liverpool boss to further accusations of "losing it". He tried this in his press conference on Friday and failed miserably on Saturday evening when his team could only manage a draw at lowly Stoke. Like the infamous Kevin Keegan "I would love it if......." saga which saw Newcastle lose a lead of more than 10 points and finally hand the title to Manchester United, Ferguson is a master at mind games.
Unless Rafael Benitez has nerves of steel there is every chance that Alex Ferguson could literally get under his skin over the next few weeks and put more pressure on the likeable Spaniard. While he has received support in many quarters it may well be time for him to "button it" and let sleeping dogs lie. His team need to do the talking on the pitch and he needs to let his team breathe!
