Australia has become something of a hotbed of casino and gambling companies of late with the online market in particular proving very popular. However, as the off-line industry continues to struggle in line with the worldwide economy there are new accusations of favouritism towards the online sector in the Australian press. So what exactly is going on?
Some of the more prominent casino operators in Australia have stepped forward to suggest that their online competitors are under-regulated, understaffed and undertrained. They believe now is the time for the Austrian authorities to step forward and increase the regulatory framework for the online industry, which in some areas is gaining to the detriment of the off-line sector.
There are concerns that the government could look towards the US system which saw online gambling banned simply by approaching the online payment system companies and placing pressure on their operations. Whether this will actually happen remains to be seen because Australia is proving to be something of a gambling Mecca at the moment with the likes of Betfair (the UK-based betting exchange) increasing its Australian exposure.
Many governments around the world are still fighting to increase and introduce new online gambling regulations with potentially billions of pounds of taxes at stake.
