Kentucky officials looking to introduce slot machines
Wednesday 14th January 2009
While Kentucky is dominated by the horseracing industry there are moves within local government to introduce significant numbers of slot machines in many states racecourse developments. The move comes after sharp falls in state income and the authorities are looking for ways and means to increase their income at a time when tax revenues are under severe pressure.
The Bill to introduce slot machines across the state is currently going through the regulatory procedure and many expect a positive outcome in the short term. It is hoped that by introducing slot machines in racecourses across the state this will not only attract more gamblers but should also ensure increased revenues from two different avenues.
Gambling income whether it is casinos, slots or racing has for many years been a significant element of each and every state budget in the US. The ongoing economic recession has seen a number of income revenues reduced significantly which is why states such as Kentucky are looking at alternatives to replenish their spending plans.
Even though many charitable organisations and associations against gambling have complained about the ever-increasing dependence upon the industry, it is near impossible to take away such large income streams without increasing direct taxes. Gambling is an integral part of US life and US politics.............
