Sutcliffe Praises GamCare

Minister leading proposed UK levy consultation visited charity’s south London headquarters and got a first-hand look at the provision of free services.

Wednesday 14th January 2009

In the UK, the GamCare registered charity has received rave reviews from Gerry Sutcliffe, the Government’s Minister for Sport and Tourism, for its provision of free services for problem gamblers. Sutcliffe also serves as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and is leading the current consultation on a proposed levy for gambling operators in order to fund the treatment of gambling addictions. He visited GamCare’s Clapham Junction headquarters in London yesterday to get a first-hand look at the charity’s range of telephone, online and face-to-face services. 'GamCare is leading the way in providing support for those with a gambling problem, helping thousands of people since it was founded in 1997,” said the Member of Parliament. “It is great to see the organisation finding new ways to reach out and I want to hear more about the new online counselling initiative, offering counselling over the Internet. GamCare revealed that it has seen demand grow for its online counselling services and has recorded over 30 clients so far. It stated that the new service meets the needs of those who may have a psychological barrier to accessing face-to-face counselling alongside those with disabilities or phobias. 'We are delighted to welcome the Minister,” said Anthony Jennens, Chairman for GamCare. “This is a valuable opportunity to witness at first-hand the range of services we offer, the commitment, professionalism and expertise of our staff and to gain a better understanding of the enormous importance of what we do for anyone affected by problem gambling.'
