Is ladies poker the next big market?

Friday 16th January 2009

As the online poker market continues to blossom it would appear that the next major market could be ladies poker. The signs have been there for a number of years with the number of lady poker players rising significantly although this has often been overshadowed by the success of events such as the World Series of Poker. However, poker sites and gambling sites are always on the lookout for the next big market and it would appear that the ladies poker market has been earmarked for the future.

While the male dominated poker industry does not appear to be overly receptive towards the idea of ladies only poker, it would appear that there is significant interest from ladies themselves. This could cause potential legal problems for the industry as historically a number of men have gate-crashed ladies only events. But is it really fair to differentiate between male and female poker players and is it fair to have female only games without men only tournaments?

The bottom line is that the market will shape itself around the needs and demands of poker players, whether these are male or female, and poker companies will always chase the money. However, we could see a number of challenges on a point of principle but this would appear to be highly unlikely.
