Today was a day of mixed emotions for Liverpool football club who do not play until Monday when they take on local rivals Everton. With just 10 minutes to go in games involving the four teams behind Liverpool they were all either drawing or getting beat with Liverpool set to remain top of the table. However, while 24 hours is a long time in politics, 10 minutes is a long time in football!
Very quickly the dream scenario began to unravel for Liverpool with Manchester United grabbing a 90th minute winner against Bolton, Chelsea scoring in injury time to take out Stoke, Aston Villa leaving it late against Sunderland and Arsenal hitting two late goals to take the points against Hull City. Manchester United’s win allows them to leapfrog over local rivals Liverpool having played the same number of games although Liverpool have a chance to leapfrog back to top if they can beat local rivals Everton on Monday.
Alex Ferguson must be enjoying this tussle with his counterpart Rafael Benitez who recently turned down a new contract with Liverpool and whose future is shrouded in secrecy. Has Ferguson finally broken his local rival or will the Spanish matador returned to teach the old Scot a lesson?
