Liverpool drop points in Merseyside derby

Monday 19th January 2009

What a difference a few days has made for Liverpool's premiership championship title hopes with a 1-1 draw against bitter rivals Everton in a rough-and-tumble Merseyside derby. Despite taking the lead after a Steven Gerard cracker from outside the box slowly but surely Everton came back into the game and with only three minutes left Cahill stepped up to head yet another goal for the blues. So how does the situation look now?

Manchester United currently sit on top of the table on level points with Liverpool yet having played one game less. Only a few days ago there had been some criticism of the UK gambling sector with Liverpool on the verge of pushing further ahead at the top of the premiership yet still distinctly second favourites behind Manchester United. However it would appear that bookmakers in the UK have read the situation to perfection so far this season with Liverpool appearing to crack after Rafael Benitez responded to various criticisms from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Many are putting this verbal assault by Benitez in the same class as the "Kevin Keegan moment" which saw his beloved Newcastle "lose" the title. Whether Liverpool can bounce back and claim the trophy is very much in the balance.
