Have UK bookmakers got the poker sector stitched up?
Monday 19th January 2009
As the number of UK bookmakers with an online presence continues to grow there is speculation that slowly but surely bookmakers in the UK are "stitching up" the online poker sector. While there is an obvious link between horse racing, football and other popular sports gambling events it would appear that the vast majority of gamblers in the UK have at some time looked into online poker and other online casino games.
As yet the regulators in the UK have seemingly ignored the growing dominance which bookmakers are starting to enjoy in the online poker and online casino sector. Whether they are looking to inject much-needed competition in this area or perhaps studying the exact details of the breakdown, it would appear that in due course the authorities need to take a closer look.
At the moment UK bookmakers are enjoying something of an Indian summer with the likes of Paddy Power, Ladbrokes, William Hill and the vast majority of the traditional bookmaker section having significant success in the online arena. Quite how long this can go on without cutting profit margins and increasing costs remains to be seen but having spent millions upon millions of pounds attracting gamblers in the past it seems as though UK bookmakers are now very much reaping their rewards.
