Manchester United scrape through against Derby County
Wednesday 21st January 2009
Derby County’s one nil victory over Manchester United in the first leg of the Carling cup semi-final was as much a shock to anybody as it was Derby County. However, even Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to admit that Derby County fully deserved their victory in the first leg and indeed United could have come away more than one goal down. But the second leg at Old Trafford was a totally different affair!
From the very first minute it seemed as though Manchester United were most certainly up for the game and very quickly they took a three goal lead. However, they then decided to step off the gas and in the 80th minute Derby scored to make the game 3-1 and 3-2 on aggregate. If Derby could manage another goal they would win on away goals and book their place in the final.
Unfortunately when Ronaldo slotted away an 89th minute penalty it looked all over but just 60 seconds later Derby scored again to give United an uncomfortable last few minutes. Manchester United finally went through to the Carling cup final 4-3 on aggregate but Derby County certainly gave them the fright of their lives and could so easily have made it to the final.
