Tottenham cut it fine in Carling Cup semi-final thriller
Wednesday 21st January 2009
After taking apart Burnley in the second half of the first leg and walking away with a 4 – 1 victory tonight's second leg should have been a breeze for premiership team Tottenham. The first half was a fairly boring affair but the second half came to life with Burnley bagging two goals to bring the tie to 4 - 3 on aggregate and then with three minutes remaining they grabbed the equaliser. As the full-time whistle went Burnley were 3 - 0 victors but unfortunately the vital away goal at Spurs in the first leg does not count double until after extra time.
Extra time was a very difficult affair for the Burnley team knowing that all they needed to do was stop Spurs scoring to get through to the final on 1 March against Manchester United. They huffed and they puffed but with only four minutes of extra time remaining Tottenham grabbed the vital goal. Burnley were then forced to go all out for the equaliser and in doing so they left themselves open at the back, something which Tottenham took advantage of and bagged another goal.
So while the scoreline ended up 3 - 2 to Burnley on the night, and an aggregate score of 6 – 4 in favour of Tottenham over the two legs, this does not tell the tale of the tie. Tottenham Hotspur now have the chance of regaining their Carling cup title after last year's victory.
