The ongoing legal action by the state of Kentucky and its Gov Steve Beshear took another U-turn today when the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled in favour of the gambling community and overturned the earlier ruling which allowed the state of Kentucky to "pinch" 141 Internet gambling domain names. Those who read this site on a regular basis will know that this is a case we have covered for some time and one which literally shook the online gambling community to the core.
We saw some of the best names in online gambling facing the loss of domain names in which they have invested hundreds of millions of dollars over the years. Quite literally businesses were on the verge of being closed down overnight, for no payment, leaving shareholders and private owners with nothing.
The argument from the state of Kentucky had been that these domain names were illegal and were in fact gambling devices similar to slot machines and poker tables. While today offers some comfort for the online gambling community the end is not yet in sight with a suggestion that the case may be taken to the State Supreme Court although no official announcement has been made by the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet.
