Despite many bookmakers halting bets on Colin Montgomerie to been instated as the Ryder Cup captain for the Celtic Manor event in September 2010 there appears to be a new competitor in the shape of Jose Maria Olazabal the Spanish golfing superstar. Many are surprised that Olazabal has stepped forward for the captain's job after he suggested he would like to play his way into the team for next years event.
Earlier this month Colin Montgomerie literally came from nowhere to be instated as favourite for the job of captain, after a sudden and sustained run on the betting exchanges. It was later revealed that in private he had agreed to put his name forward while at that time in public he was very much undecided. It will be interesting to see who is now instated as captain of the Ryder Cup 2010 team as both players have substantial experience of golf in general and the Ryder Cup in particular.
A tournament committee meeting in Dubai on 28 January will see the eventual captain announced but it would appear to be a straight battle between Scotland and Spain. While Olazabal’s form has been mixed of late there is no doubt that both he and Colin Montgomerie have the credentials to be excellent Ryder Cup captains.
