As Martin O'Neill secured the services of ex-Liverpool striker Emile Heskey for a bargain £3.5 million there is intense speculation that O'Neill is looking to secure the services of Michael Owen in the summer. When questioned about the move O'Neill was rather vague in his comments and suggested that he had not looked that far ahead, before confirming that Owen is a player he admires and believes has great potential for the future.
As Newcastle United struggle under the threat of possible relegation from the Premier League many fans will be dismayed to hear that Michael Owen may leave but relieved to hear that a possible move won't happen until the summer. Michael Owen is a vital element of a Newcastle team as they look to pull themselves away from the relegation battle and the massive loss of income incurred if they fall into the Championship League.
This comes in a week when Newcastle owner Mike Ashley confirmed the club made a substantial loss for the year and he has poured more than £100 million into football club since acquisition. In all honesty Newcastle United cannot afford to drop into the lower leagues and while Ashley appears to be unwilling to finance any large acquisitions in the current transfer window he knows his business is in need of investment capital.
