Will the pay freeze in the casino sector have an impact?
Sunday 25th January 2009
Each and every day we hear of industries in the US which are having to instigate pay freezes to try and retain as much cash as possible to see them through the troubled times. The casino industry is no different to the general economy of the US and as such we have seen a number of pay freezes announced across the sector as well as a significant loss of employment positions. There are concerns that this could eventually impact upon the quality and quantity of skilled dealers in the poker industry.
The poker industry has sometimes been seen as being in the higher echelons of the gambling industry and as such quality dealers have attracted significant wage agreements. There is a concern that as business becomes tougher for many casinos around the US, and the rest of the world, that not only will we see a number of dealers lose their jobs but many appear to have fallen out of love with the industry due to ever tougher targets and working conditions.
There was very much a feeling that poker dealers were not benefiting to the same extent as casino operators when the industry was flying high just 12 months ago. Whether this feeling was justified or not is debatable but now the tough times have arrived, it seems as though employees are first in the firing line.
