After Manchester United's 5 – 0 drubbing of relegation favourites West Brom it was tonight the turn of Liverpool to try and claw back points and move level with Manchester United at the top of the table. While Liverpool started tonight’s match with Wigan in great style, dominating much of the early play, they only had one goal to show for their substantial possession and later paid the price with a 1 – 1 draw.
This now leaves Liverpool with three draws in their last three games and yet to record a Premiership victory in the calendar year 2009. They are now two points behind Manchester United having played one more game and have slipped to third place in the league with Chelsea's win allowing them to leapfrog their Merseyside rivals.
Ever since Liverpool manager Benitez decided to play mind games with Alex Ferguson his team have been underperforming on the park. Liverpool have a number of tricky games coming up over the next few weeks and there is speculation and concern that they could drop yet further out of the title race with Aston Villa only one point behind.
As the teams behind Manchester United battle for position it would seem as though the title could be edging back towards Manchester although there is still some way to go yet. More worryingly for United's rivals is the fact that historically they have come on stronger in the second half of the season over the last few years. Can Alex Ferguson pull it off again?
