Betfair and Rugby League Sign MOU

Rugby Football League signs Memorandum of Understanding with Betfair

Friday 17th December 2004

Betfair and the English Rugby Football league have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in order to safeguard the ‘continued integrity of Rugby league the area of sports betting’. The agreement will allow the RFL greater access to information from the betting industry and they will now be able to request information from Betfair records on specific individuals where there is grounds for suspicion that untoward betting has occurred.

The agreement will be seen as further acceptance by a sporting body of the world’s biggest betting exchange. Betfair previously signed similar agreements with, amongst others, the Jockey Club, the Cricket Council and the FA.

Commenting on the agreement, The Rugby Football League’s Chief Operating Officer Nigel Wood said: “This Memorandum of Understanding represents is an important step forward for Rugby Football League. Whilst we do not believe inappropriate betting is a major problem in the sport, we feel it is important to take advantage of enhanced monitoring of the betting markets in order to prevent and discourage any persons considering such activity. We recognise Betfair’s position as a market leader in the field of online betting exchanges and we believe our partnership will be of great value to the sport – as it has been to the governing bodies who already work with them.”

Mark Davies, Betfair’s Director of Communications, said, “We are delighted to be able to widen the breadth of agreements we have with the governing bodies of sport. Working closely with administrators, and allowing them access to the information we have, is the best way to ensure that sport is kept free of crime. Betfair has no vested interest in the outcome of any event and our interests are absolutely in line with those who run the events. This is good news for the integrity of sport.”
