EPT Season Six Details Released

Building on the success of its fifth instalment, which saw a total prize pool of around $77 million, leading poker tour schedules new events for both Russia and Portugal.

Tuesday 30th June 2009

The PokerStars.com European Poker Tour (EPT) has announced details of the first half of its sixth season of action featuring new stops for both Russia and Portugal. Last year's EPT season was a success as it overtook the rival World Poker Tour in terms of player numbers and prize pools. Its fifth instalment generated an overall prize pool of almost $77 million and saw 7,980 players from 97 countries competing. The EPT revealed that the four richest prize pools available in poker tournaments outside of the US last year occurred at its events in The Bahamas, Monte Carlo, San Remo and Barcelona. In addition, its Monte Carlo tournament generated the biggest prize pool ever seen in Europe at $12.3 million, with newly signed Team PokerStars Pro Netherlands member Pieter De Korver besting 935 others to take home the $3.2 million top prize. 'The new EPT season includes many events, which have made the past five seasons such a triumph with world-record breaking fields and prize pools across Europe,' said John Duthie, Chief Executive Officer for the EPT. 'We have set very high standards and we aim to improve on them still further in season six with new additions to the schedule as well as a richer mix of games and buy-ins to cater to more players. 'This year's EPT will be bigger and better than ever, kicking off on August 17 in one of our newly scheduled destinations, magnificent Moscow in Russia. “Overall, the tour will visit an unprecedented 13 countries, an increase of four events on top of last season. As well as Russia, the tour will include new stops in Portugal this November and other destinations to be announced shortly.” After Moscow, the EPT will move on to Barcelona from September 4 to 9 before the action shifts to London’s Hilton Metropole from October 1 to 7. Warsaw’s Hyatt Regency is the next stop from October 20 to 25 before Vilamoura in Portugal plays host from November 17 to 22. The last stop for 2009 will be Prague from December 16 to 21 with The Bahamas’ Atlantis hosting a $10,600 buy-in event from January 4 to 14.
