The inaugural Sports Legends Challenge has announced that NHL ice hockey legend Mark Messier, skateboard icon Tony Hawk and mixed martial arts stars Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture have become the latest to sign up for its special autumn tournament.
Being held to benefit the Butch Kerzner Summit Foundation, the Sports Legends Challenge is scheduled to take place September 14 to 17 in The Bahamas featuring some of the world’s biggest sports stars including Troy Aikman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Richard Petty, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Joe Namath and Reggie Jackson alongside 25 of the globe's top poker pros such as Jamie Gold, Annie Duke, Johnny Chan and Mike Sexton.
The Sports Legends Challenge is being presented by AbsolutePoker.net and will offer amateur poker players the chance to compete with and against these stars in a range of tournaments for up to ten million dollars in prize money.
The event will culminate with the Sports Legends All-Star Poker Challenge, which is due to be televised in America on Thanksgiving Day through Fox Sports. This winner-takes-all no-limit Texas hold’em grand final will feature the sports legends and professional poker players battling it out against the top-finishing amateur competitors.
Seats to the Sports Legends Challenge are being awarded through The World Poker Store’s TheBarPokerLeague.com. League members can compete in free Texas hold'em tournaments as part of the site’s Battle Of The Bars Team competitions hosted in the US for the right to travel to The Bahamas.
“With the addition of Liddell, Couture, Hawk and Messier, we will enhance the experience for participants and entice a whole new audience of sports fans to be part of this event,' said Bruce Bibbero, Chief Executive Officer for the Sports Legends Challenge.
'We've had an unbelievable response to this first-ever event. The support from the sports, poker and fan communities reinforces our vision to turn the Sports Legends Challenge into a series of worldwide events.'
