UK’s Daily Mirror and Paddy Power launch new competition

Companies offer bettors chance to “Do a Frankie”

Monday 13th September 2004

In the UK a leading newspaper, the Daily Mirror, has teamed up with online betting site Paddy Power to launch a new racing competition. The competition involves the racing event on 25 September, at Ascot’s Festival of British Racing. The competition organised between the Mirror and Paddy Power holds a cash prize for a winning contestant of £1 million.

The contest is offering the challenge to keen punters and spectators to “Do a Frankie”. A term referring to the extraordinary achievement of popular jockey Frankie Dettori, who in 1996 achieved the unlikely accolade of having ridden all seven winners at the event- an achievement judged at astounding odds of 25,095-1.

Inspired by this great feat, this latest competition is challenging punters to come up with the winning seven-horse accumulator. A successful selection will earn the player £1 million. Entries are via the newspaper, and the winning entrant will then earn a VIP day out at the Ascot event, and the complimentary seven-horse accumulator.

Paddy Power are providing the transport to get the winner to Ascot, and if applicable covering any necessary hotel and travel expenses. The winner will watch the day’s events from the Paddy Power box at Ascot, where they will be joined by Daily Mirror staff member David Yates. As the seven-horse accumulator is a tall order of a bet, there are arrangements in place for the winner to help them along should one of their choices turn out to be a loser.

Should a loser be selected, a £100 accumulator will be taken out for the rest of the afternoon- from a six-horse selection, down to a double. If at the final race, the winning entrant is still out of luck, a £1,000 bet will be staked on that last race. A representative of Paddy Power said of the competition: 'I'll be right there alongside the winner, cheering home the runners - it would be fantastic to see someone win a cool million. And, rest assured, I'll be the winner's new best friend to help celebrate the million in style!”
