Big winner on Euro 2004
Risk on Greece pays off at £332,000
Tuesday 6th July 2004
In Britain a 34 year old man has won £332,000 thanks to Greece’s victory over Portugal in the Euro 2004 final. The man placed the bet in a branch of William Hill, starting at £4000 when Greece were still long shots to win. The bet then increased to £25,000 during the tournament, and spokesperson for William Hill Graham Sharpe has classified the final win as “one of the biggest winning bets in football betting history”.
The lucky punter was originally thinking of betting on England then changed his mind to instead place his money on underdog team Greece. William Hill took a total of £60 million worth of bets during the tournament, through its branches as well as its phone and internet betting facilities. In total £350 million was wagered on the outcome of Euro 2004 making it the biggest ever sports betting tournament. The competition also saw a sharp rise in internet bets placed from around the world, sparking renewed debates on the illegal status of online gambling in areas around the world, particularly in Asia Pacific regions.
