Issued by the Association of Remote Gambling Operators

Friday 25th June 2004

Clive Hawkswood, who for the past three years has been directly responsible for Betting and Racing matters at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, has been appointed General Secretary of the newly formed Association of Remote Gambling Operators (ARGO). One of his duties at DCMS has been to lead Government policy on remote gambling.

Mr Hawkswood, a Londoner, was employed as a betting office manager in the early eighties. After taking a degree in politics at Lancaster University, he joined the Civil Service in 1988, beginning at the Home Office and then moving to DCMS following the transfer of responsibility for gambling to that Department. He will take up his new position in mid-August.

Ian Spearing, acting Chairman of ARGO, said: “We are extremely pleased to have obtained the services of someone who knows so much about the betting industry and who is so well respected within it, both in this country and in Europe. Given his background, Clive will be effective in his new post from day one and he will give ARGO the sort of lift any new organisation needs. We all look forward to working with him in the future”.

Note to editors: The increased importance and popularity of internet and other forms of remote gambling led to ARGO being formed earlier this year. The Association is based in London and membership will be open to operators of internet, telephone and inter-active platforms. ARGO is affiliated to the Association of British Bookmakers, but will operate entirely independently, with its own Executive Committee, staff and officers.
