Bookies break records in June

Bookies see record takings so far in June, thanks to huge sporting events

Tuesday 22nd June 2004

Ladbrokes, the UK’s largest bookmaker has just announced that the first weeks of June have been, “the biggest in bookmaking history”. June has seen the start of Euro 2004, Royal Ascot and the US Open- huge events in the three biggest betting sports.

Even within this betting frenzy, Ladbrokes has been able to notice a new trend continue- that internet betting is moving away from the traditional betting favourite of racing. £300million has been bet on football in June so far, and £150 million being bet on Royal Ascot. Balthazar Fabricius of Ladbrokes explained, “half of our Internet turnover is football now”.

The combination of this increase in football betting over the Internet, and a rise in England’s confidence in their own team saw bookmakers taking a hit last week, after England’s victory over Switzerland, as well as the heavily supported Wayne Rooney scoring the first goal. Although the country as a whole wants nothing more than an English overall victory in the competition, for bookmakers this national pride presently apparent in the now extremely popular football betting over the Internet, an English win is exactly the result they don’t want from a financial point of view.
