Mysterious punter stakes $5 million on Lonhro

An anonymous businessman has placed 5 million AUD on Lonhro to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Sydney's Randwick racetrack on. Sportingbet Australia said the mysterious punter accepted odds of 1.20 and stands to win a million if the favourite finishes first in what will be its final race before retirement.

'It is certainly the biggest bet ever taken by Sportingbet and bigger than I have ever taken in my years as a bookmaker,' said Michael Sullivan, spokesman for the Internet bookies. He added that the same man had already won two separate million dollar bets on Lonhro in the past six weeks. He also lost a million when he backed Alinghi to win last weekend's Golden Slipper, in which she finished third.
