Senator vs the online casino
Jaworski wants to crack the whip on online gambling operator
Wednesday 7th April 2004
The Supreme Court earlier this January unanimously declared null and void a franchise for online gambling that was given to Sports and Games Entertainment Corp. (SAGE) by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. six years ago.
The 10-page legal decision given by Associate Justice Consuelo Ynares-Santiago, said the firm acted ‘beyond the limits of its authority when it operated it’s sports betting and Internet gaming stations.’
Now Senator Robert Jaworski wants a slice of the action. “I am preparing to file charges against for defying a Supreme Court ruling that banned online or Internet gambling in the country,” said Senator Robert Jaworski.
“Because there is no control in one's use of the Internet, online gambling has victimized many children. Still many others get addicted to it, ruining their education,” added Jaworski.
According to the Senator’s office, at least three high school students have accumulated some more than a million dollars in debts because of online gambling. The former professional basketball player turned Senator claims that the huge investment in online gambling operations could also be a reason company owners continue their illegal business.
