UK Bookies Brace Themselves for Massive Grand Natn'l Weekend
Bookmakers Expect £200 million handle on biggest National weekend ever
Friday 2nd April 2004
Bookmakers are preparing for one of their busiest days of wagering ever this Saturday, as the coincidence of the world famous Grand National race, football's two FA Cup semi-finals and the crucial Third cricket Test between England and the West Indies will make it a sporting weekend to remember. Pundits are estimating that around 20 million people will bet on the National, from more than 200 countries around the world and 30 per cent of all wagers, worth some £60million, are expected to be placed online. Internet bookmakers are saying they are working closely with British police in attempt to combat cyber extortionists from holding their sites to ransom through ‘Denial of Service’ attacks, which sadly are becoming more and more inevitable in the lead up to big betting events.
However, most bookies are in positive spirits and relishing the sheer volume of bets expected. Ladbrokes and William Hill have recruited thousands of extra staff to cope with the huge demand. William Hill spokesman David Hood said: “There is no doubt turnover could smash all records. It is two massive events falling on the same day. It’s a great sporting weekend and a lot of people who don’t normally place bets will get caught up in the excitement.
It is only five years ago that a Grand National day generated its first six-figure turnover. The UK is officially the gambling capital of the world.”
