The second race of the 2010 Formula One season takes place this Sunday from Australia with Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso expected to exploit his win two weeks ago in Bahrain with another triumph in Melbourne.
The 28-year-old Spaniard last won this event in 2006 on his way to the second of his two Driver’s Championships and is listed at odds of 9/5 with Bwin.com and SportingBwet.com to win this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix. Slightly longer, SkyBet.com, VictorChandler.com, StanJames.com, PaddyPower.com and Ladbrokes.com are offering 2/1 while ToteSport.com shows 11/5.
Alonso has had very little success in his previous three seasons with only one podium finish last term but moved to the iconic Ferrari team in the off-season in hopes of winning a third Driver’s Championship. WilliamHill.com, bet365.com, BlueSq.com, Coral.co.uk and 888Sport.com show odds of 9/4 on success for the former Renault and McLaren Mercedes driver in Australia this weekend while BetDaq.com is going with 119/50.
British driver Jenson Button won last year’s Australian event for Brawn GP on his way to his inaugural Driver’s Championship while BetFred.com has Alonso at odds of 12/5 to triumph this weekend followed by BoyleSports.com with 5/2 while Betfair.com shows 257/100.
Close behind in the odds race is Germany’s Sebastian Vettel, who is shown at 15/8 by StanJames.com to win in Australia on Sunday followed by bet365.com with 2/1. Last season, the Red Bull Racing driver became the youngest person to finish as a runner-up in the Driver’s Championship, but much more is expected from the 22-year-old with ToteSport.com showing 11/5 on victory in Melbourne followed by VictorChandler.com, BlueSq.com and 888Sport.com with 9/4.
Vettel finished in 13th in Australia in 2009 after being involved in a collision with Polish driver Robert Kubica but Bwin.com is going with odds of 23/10 on a win for the young German this Sunday while BoyleSports.com, SportingBet.com, PaddyPower.com, Coral.co.uk, Ladbrokes.com and WilliamHill.com show 5/2.
For their part, BetDaq.com has Vettel at odds of 261/100 to win in Melbourne followed by Betfair.com with 133/50 and SkyBet.com at 11/4 while BetFred.com shows 3/1.
Alonso’s teammate at Ferrari, Brazilian driver Felipe Massa, is also fancied to win in Melbourne this weekend with Ladbrokes.com, Coral.co.uk, WilliamHill.com, SkyBet.com, StanJames.com and PaddyPower.com showing odds of 9/2 while VictorChandler.com, 888Sport.com and BlueSq.com are offering 5/1.
The 28-year-old was injured in July at the Hungarian Grand Prix after being struck in the head by a suspension spring that had fallen off a competitor’s car. He subsequently sat out the remainder of the 2009 season but has now made a full recovery and finished second two weeks ago at the Bahrain Grand Prix. ToteSport.com and BoyleSports.com list Massa at odds of 11/2 to win this weekend while BetFred.com and Bet365.com show 6/1. Slightly longer, BetDaq.com, SportingBet.com and Bwin.com are currently offering 13/2 while Betfair.com has 34/5.
