Betfair signs memo with FA

more access to Betfair data for Football authorities

Monday 29th March 2004

Betfair, the UK-based online betting exchange, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Football Association to try to weed out dubious betting online.

The agreement means that the FA will have better access to Betfair’s customer data.

Online betting exchanges have attracted criticism for allegedly not doing enough to counter corruption in betting. Betfair claims that such criticism is motivated by money and the mainstream bookmakers’ fear of competition.

Miles Rodgers, a member of the Platinum Racing syndicate, was barred from racing for two years by the Jockey Club last week after being found guilty of laying two of the syndicate’s horses to lose on a betting exchange. The horses lost.

Betfair has signed similar agreements with other sporting bodies such as the Jockey Club, the Darts Regulation Authority and the International Cricket Council.

Betfair's chief executive, Stephen Hill, said: 'Working closely with sporting regulators, and allowing them access... is the best way to ensure that sport is kept free of crime.'
