Online Casino Operator Released From Prison
First man ever to be prosecuted by Federal Government for internet gaming freed
Thursday 25th March 2004
The decision that U.S. policy toward online, offshore gaming is an unfair breach of World Trade Organisation rules will come as welcome news to Jay Cohen who has spent the last few years protesting as such from behind bars.
Cohen founded World Sports Exchange in Antigua and in 1998 became the first man to be prosecuted by the U.S. under the Federal Wire Act. He was released this week after an eighteen-month sentence.
Cohen will feel vindicated by the WTOs ruling. As he told the Las Vegas Sun on his release: “I still maintain I ran a legal business in another country. I regret that I did not get a fair trial or a fair appeals process.' He added that he hoped a positive decision for Antigua would, “open cross-border gambling and the United States will no longer be able to harass offshore operators.'
