Intertops releases odds on retired players & telly survivors

Players and survivors: Who will win?

Tuesday 17th February 2004

Internet bookmaker Intertops.com has released the odds this week on fighters of two kinds. The online bookie is offering betting options on the retirement of two boxing giants, that they will return to the ring soon.

37-year-old British boxer Lennox Lewis aka the ‘Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World' and Lord of the Ring, has recently announced his retirement. He said: ‘I have nothing left to achieve in the ring’. But Intertops.com doesn’t seem take no for an answer and is betting that there's a 10/1 chance of him returning to fight for the WBC title in 2005.

Away from the ring, into the field is another retired and controversial NHL star, 39-year old Dominik Hasek. Reported to be the ‘greatest goalie on the planet’ and formerly known the Dominator, he is now being called the Terminator, because he’s back like Arnie.

After retiring for 2002/2003, the Czech returned recently with the Red Wings this season for 14 games before his departure again. After 2003’s Stanley Cup he said he got all that he asked for. But judging by his return record Intertops.com is betting that there is a chance he will return.

‘Retirement is a strange phenomenon in sport and in the entertainment industry, big retirement announcements are made followed shortly by a comeback,’ says Intertops.com Chief Bet Manager Michael Maerz. ‘We thought we'd give our customers the chance to wager on this unpredictable decision made by these two sporting greats,’ he adds.

Not content with retired players, the 7-year old operator is betting on a different kind of player, the Survivor. The sports bookie is offering odds on who will survive the CBS hit TV series Survivor: All-Stars. For now, Jenna Lewis is favored to survive.

The new reality show Survivor All-Stars returns to the Pearl Islands, running into its fourth year has 18 contestants split into three tribes.

Intertops.com is betting on budding actress Jenna L. as favorite at 3/4 to survive without Amber & Rob Mariano. Jenna was 9th to be voted off Borneo, but Intertops.com believes she has staying power in Panama.

Maerz says, ‘Three episodes in and we are delighted to offer the first odds on the latest, and probably most exciting, of the Survivor series. If you want to cast a little cash on your favorite castaway -- we've got the action’.
