Betting on a dead horse

Internet bookies bet on a dead horse

Tuesday 17th February 2004

A London, South Quay-based bookie made the embarrassing discovering that it's not possible to bet on a dead horse.

Capital Sports, the operator blamed an administrative error for offering odds on a horse called Behrajan. The horse, it was later discovered, was put down in few weeks ago after a fall at Warwick.

‘One of our traders would have entered Behrajan's odds by mistake, and they were removed as soon as the error was noticed,’ said Alan Turner, acting managing director for the Internet bookies. A Canary-Wharf based punter said the error was funny Behrajan’s death was big news recently in racing circles.

The bookie which claims to have a global outlook and claims to ‘act decisively, keeping one step ahead of our rivals’ in its marketing literature said they were lucky no player bet on the horse, as most people looking at their web site tend to know which horses are no longer running.

Continuing its horse sense, offered betting options on the Grand National with odds of 33-1 on Stormez, Shotgun Willy and Gunther McBride, if one ignored the fact that they were not running in the April showpiece - the biggest race of the year. Alan Turner had a similar reply: ‘The odds were only there for a day before mistakes were noticed.’
