Turf Club Wakes Up to Betting Exchanges

Irish horse racing body rethink issue of betting exchanges

Friday 13th February 2004

Irish domestic horse racing authority, the Turf Club, as announced a committee will be set up to examine the repercussions of betting exchanges on Irish racing. The move signifies a u-turn in the authority’s thinking, as last year it decided it would not be engaging in any form of dialogue with the exchanges. A sharp increase in betting on Irish racing through companies such as Betfair, however, has made the Turf Club sit up and take notice.

Following Betfair’s recent Memorandum of Understanding with the Jockey Club of Great Britain, which includes a clause allowing the club access to confidential records of its transactions should foul play be suspected, it seems that the Turf Club now feel it prudent to follow suit in order to safeguard the integrity of the sport. The Irish Independent has hinted that the Club may have its eyes on one particular jockey that they suspect of profiting from the exchanges.

The Turf Club have announced a visit to Britain to hold discussions with the Jockey Club on a range of issues concerning betting exchanges, and that officials will meet on 23rd February to nominate an executive committee to sit on the betting exchanges investigation body.
