Intertops.com goes to college
Sports betting sites eyes college basketball after NBA
Thursday 12th February 2004
National Basketball Asssociation (NBA) related online betting is big business. Now Intertops.com, the St.John’s, Antigua based sports betting site wants to catch them young.
The online bookmaker has released its odds on who will remain undefeated in the NCAAB 2003/2004 season.
While the St. Joseph Hawks have an impressive record, but will they remain undefeated asks Intertops? Coach Phil Martelli says, ‘We expect to see the Hawks flying high as National Champions.’ Other favorites include the Stanford Cardinals from the Pacific side who have proved against all odds that they can fight back, but the competition is high in the Pac 10 tournament.
‘After Arizona defeated Stanford last year, we've seen that the Pac 10 tournament can be the graveyard for the top seeds,’ says Intertops.com Chief Bet Manager Michael Maerz.
After the adult or major versions of baseball (NBA), football (NFL), hockey (NHL) more and more online betting sites are turning to a ‘catch them young’ strategy by allowing betting on college related sports.
According to information compiled by the National Council on Problem Gambling, 63% of 16-year-olds gamble. Another recent study reported that gambling from college and high school students is so common that in Canada and the US alone, about 15 million people between the ages of 12 and 17 have gambled in the past year. Of these people, two million reported having a serious gambling problem.
While the social issues are debatable, just in terms of sheer numbers the market is extremely prospective for online gambling sites.
