Odds on the 2004 Academy Awards
Seven years and $300 million later, could the third time be a charm for The Lord of the Rings?
Friday 6th February 2004
Seven years and $300 million later, could the third time be a charm for The Lord of the Rings? The groundbreaking film trilogy has been shut out thus far in the Best Picture category, but is the favorite this time around as Oscar nominations were announced for the 2004 awards show, to be hosted by Billy Crystal, February 29.
The previous two installments of the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, and The Two Towers, were largely ignored by the Academy, but the final installment, The Return of the King, seems to be getting its due with a leading 11 nominations. It's also only the second trilogy, after Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather classics, to ever receive Best Picture nominations for each installment.
'Whether or not you are a fan of The Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth, or the author J.R.R. Tolkien, or the films themselves, you have to respect the scope and sheer cinematic history that director Peter Jackson and his cast and crew of over 2000 have created,' said BetCBsports (www.betcbs.com), Senior Odds Maker, Dan 'The Man' Johnson. 'It is by far the favorite to win Best Picture and that is why we opened it as a 1-4 favorite, (a $400 wager would win $100). Jackson is also up for Best Director for Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and ironically will go head-to- head with Sophia Coppola, Lost In Translation, for the directorial prize.'
