Brazil and Argentina top bookmakers’ picks

The South American pair are among the favourites to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup after making it through to the tournament’s quarter-finals.

Tuesday 29th June 2010

The odds on Brazil winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup have fallen after the five-time champion booked its place into the quarter-finals of the competition last night with a very comfortable victory over fellow South American side Chile. The ‘Canarinho’ were listed at odds of 4/1 with ExtraBet.com, BetFred.com and Ladbrokes.com just over one week ago to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup but is now being shown by ExtraBet.com at 23/10. Brazil has benefitted from the failure of other tops sides including defending champion Italy to make it into the latter stages of the competition and punters can get odds of 12/5 on Dunga’s men lifting the trophy in Johannesburg come July 11. Slightly longer, WilliamHill.com currently shows odds of 12/5 on Brazil winning this year’s FIFA World Cup while Betfair.com, WBX.com and BetDaq.com are going with 121/50. Brazil will next face the Netherlands in Port Elizabeth on Friday afternoon with a spot in the semi-finals against either Uruguay or Ghana at stake. Even before this crucial and highly anticipated game, bet365.com, PaddyPower.com, BoyleSports.com, BlueSq.com, VictorChandler.com, ToteSport.com, SkyBet.com, SportingBet.com, StanJames.com, Bodog.com, Bwin.com, 888Sport.com, Ladbrokes.com, BetFred.com and Coral.co.uk are showing odds of 5/2 on Brazil winning the whole competition. Argentina is also among the favourites to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup after securing its passage into the quarter-finals by dismantling a talented Mexico side on Sunday evening. Led by talismanic striker Diego Maradona, ‘La Albiceleste’ won the final of its two World Cup’s in 1986 but the 49-year-old is now the side’s manager and is set to send out his team to face Germany on Saturday afternoon in Cape Town. Ladbrokes.com is offering odds of 3/1 on Argentina lifting the 2010 FIFA World Cup followed by SportingBet.com, WBX.com and Bodog.com with 15/4 and BetDaq.com offering 389/100. Argentina and Brazil have never met in the championship game of a World Cup but the structure of this year’s competition could well see this eventuality come to pass. Even with this, Betfair.com, WilliamHill.com, ExtraBet.com and Bwin.com list Argentina at odds of 4/1 to win it all while Coral.co.uk, 888Sport.com, StanJames.com, PaddyPower.com, BlueSq.com, VictorChandler.com, BoyleSports.com, BetFred.com, bet365.com, ToteSport.com and SkyBet.com are going with a slightly longer 7/2.
