Germany aiming to end the reign of Spain

The second semi-final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup takes place tonight with two of Europe’s top sides facing off from Durban.

Wednesday 7th July 2010

The second semi-final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup takes place tonight from Durban and sees reigning European champion Spain face Germany with online bookmakers offering a range of odds on who will win. Spain has not been this far in a World Cup since placing fourth in 1950 and is being shown at odds of 29/20 by SportingBet.com to defeat Germany in normal time and progress to the final while Coral.co.uk, Bodog.com, ExtraBet.com and WilliamHill.com are offering 6/4. The winner of this evening’s game will have earned the right to take part in the final from Johannesburg on July 11 with PaddyPower.com, ToteSport.com, StanJames.com and Betfair.com listing odds of 8/5 on Spain triumphing after 90 minutes. Spain has been one of the favourites to win the tournament but narrow victories against Paraguay in the quarter-finals and Portugal in the round of 16 have seen bookmaker’s re-access the chances of ‘La Furia Roja’ triumphing to take home its first-ever World Cup title. Nevertheless, punters can still get odds of 13/8 from Ladbrokes.com, BetDaq.com, BetFred.com, BoyleSports.com, WBX.com, bet365.com, BlueSq.com, 888Sport.com, SkyBet.com and VictorChandler.com on the Iberian’s defeating Germany in 90 minutes while Bwin.com shows 17/10. Very few experts expected Germany to go this far into the competition but the young side posted very convincing victories over England in the round of 16 and Argentina in the quarter-finals and is being offered at odds of 7/5 by Bwin.com to defeat Spain and progress to the final. Slightly longer, VictorChandler.com and Ladbrokes.com show Germany at odds of 13/8 to win this evening in normal time while ExtraBet.com lists 17/10. Germany is one of the world’s most successful national soccer teams and has won the World Cup on three occasions in the past. However, current manager Joachim Low was expected to preside over a rebuilding phase with no real hopes of winning the tournament. Despite this, ‘Die Mannschaft’ topped a tough group that also contained Ghana and Serbia and in striker Miroslav Klose has one of the tournament’s top scorers. In fact, the 32-year-old Bayern Munich player has put the ball into the back of the net four times in South Africa and i snow only one behind Ronaldo’s all-time World Cup record of 15 goals. 888Sport.com, SkyBet.com, Bodog.com, BlueSq.com, ToteSport.com and SportingBet.com are offering Germany at odds of 7/4 to defeat Spain in normal time followed by WBX.com, WilliamHill.com, bet365.com, Coral.co.uk, StanJames.com and PaddyPower.com with 9/5. At the far end of the spectrum are BoyleSports.com, Betfair.com and BetFred.com showing 15/8 while BetDaq.com lists 187/100. Should the match remain level after 90 minutes, the teams will play two 15-minute periods of extra time, which is an eventuality WilliamHill.com, BoyleSports.com and ExtraBet.com are offering at odds of 21/10 while WBX.com shows 109/50. Neither team has yet drawn a 2010 FIFA World Cup game but StanJames.com, ToteSport.com, BlueSq.com, Coral.co.uk, SportingBet.com, 888Sport.com, BetFred.com, SkyBet.com and PaddyPower.com show odds of 11/5 that tonight will represent their first while Bodog.com, bet365.com and VictorChandler.com are going for 9/4. Germany last faced extra time during a World Cup match in 2006 when it lost to eventual champion Italy in the semi-finals while Spain has not dealt with this eventuality since 1990 when it was defeated by Yugoslavia in the round of 16. Bettors can get odds of 223/100 from BetDaq.com and Betfair.com that the teams will face extra time tonight while Ladbrokes.com is offering 23/10 before Bwin.com showing 12/5.
