Leading online betting and gaming provider Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG has announced that it saw ‘record’ sportsbetting turnover during the recent 2010 FIFA World Cup when compared to previous major soccer events.
The Vienna-based firm reported that up to 260,000 customers a day took advantage of its ‘considerably extended range of betting services during the 2010 FIFA World Cup’ while around 900,000 placed wagers over the course of the tournament with about 213,000 of these coming from new clients.
The firm revealed that it was also able to ‘successfully reactivate existing customers’ as some 90,000 took advantage of its product portfolio after being dormant for over six months.
“Compared to the Euro 2008, Bwin increased its sportsbetting gross gaming revenues by nearly 40 percent to an average of over €1.1 million a day,” read a statement from Bwin.
“This figure was almost doubled by comparison with the 2006 FIFA World Cup. A sportsbetting margin of around 9.1 percent was an improvement on both the Euro 2008 at 8.3 percent and the 2006 FIFA World Cup at 6.7 percent.”
Bwin revealed that the most popular game in terms of the number of wagers placed was the semi-final featuring Germany against Spain. This was followed by the final that saw the Netherlands take on Spain and the other semi-final with Uruguay versus the Dutch.
