iBetX Announces 1st EU Horse Racing Handicapping Champion

iBetX, the online betting exchange, has announced the winner of the first ever European Handicapping Championship. Phil Baron, from Spain, beat online contestants from across Europe over three weekend-long rounds of horse racing action in June and July, winning the title of European Handicapping Champion plus the 10,000 pound prize.

Phil Baron said: “I am delighted to be the first European Handicapping Champion. The Championship is the first of its kind and a great opportunity for punters to show how good they are. It’s been a great challenge.”

Baron was presented with his winning trophy and a cheque for 10,000 pounds outside the UK Jockey Club in central London.

Organised and sponsored by iBetX together with several partner websites, the European Championship is unique in enabling punters from across Europe to play against each other in backing horses to win and laying horses to lose. This is unlike traditional betting competitions, where competitors attempt to pick only winning horses.

“The Championship has been a great success,” said Imraan Malik, director of iBetX. “It was a close competition which attracted high calibre punters from across Europe, and a great start to what will be a yearly event. We are already looking forward to making the 2005 European Handicapping Championship even bigger and better.”

One of the Championship’s leading competitors, Simon Lake, commented: “The competition is not for the faint hearted. It is not just about picking winners and success is not just about luck - punters need to study racing form and decide whether a horse will win or lose.”

All three rounds of the European Handicapping Championship were played online. The top 25% of punters from the semi-final went on to the final to compete for the Championship title and the prize of 10,000 pounds. All punters backed and laid horses on the same race cards throughout the Championship, to ensure fairness.
