Dog Leaves Horse For Dust
Sausage loving dog outsprints horse William Hill’s inter-species racing
Friday 4th June 2004
Not since the upset of the tortoise and the hare have bookies been so surprised by a racing result, as Simply Fabulous, a sausage munching, middle-aged, retired greyhound sprinted to victory against top Racehorse, Tiny Tim by seven horse lengths.
The inter-species meet at Kempton Park was held to draw attention the Vodaphone Epsom Derby and the William Hill Derby at Wimbledon dog track, both this Saturday.
William Hill had Tiny Tim as clear favourite at 8-11, but didn’t bank on the underdog’s sheer acceleration speed over short distances. The greyhound’s owner, David Hood, explained why, over a distance of 400m, the dog will have an advantage: “Two furlongs is less than half the horse’s optimum distance, and while a dog is designed to chase, a horse is designed to race with other horses, and it has an extra 10% of its bodyweight on its back, in the form of the jockey.”
