‘One Race Per Day is Fixed,’ Says Ladbrokes Chief
‘one race a day’ is fixed in British horseracing
Wednesday 2nd June 2004
The Chief-executive of Ladbrokes, the UK’s biggest bookmaker, has told the BBC that he believes at least ‘one race a day’ is fixed in British horseracing. Chris Bell makes the startling claims in a documentary to be aired next week on BBC2. The indictment comes following allegations that three alleged corruption cases currently under investigation have a common link to one criminal element, creating fears of widespread involvement of organised crime in horseracing.
According to the Racing Post, Jockey Club investigations into races lost by Races lost by Ice Saint, Tollbrae and Red Lancer have thrown up suspicious betting patterns all leading to the same source.
It is understood that Bell was responding a question which asked whether he thought corruption had increased since the advent of Internet betting and betting exchanges. Bell has been vocal in the past in his denunciation of person-to-person exchanges.
