Rodgers banned for two years following jockey club investigation

These are scandalous times for British horse racing, and the latest sorry chapter concerns owner and former racing syndicate director, Mark Rogers – the most recent racing insider to be found abusing the trust of the betting exchanges.

A discplinary hearing of the Jockey Club banned Rodgers for two years for betting on his own horses to lose. He is the first to be penalised since it became illegal for owners, trainers and stable staff to do so.

The ruling came following an investiagtion into races involving Uhoomagoo at Redcar on October 28 and Million Percent at Wolverhampton on November 14. Both horses odds had drifted noticably before the race and both were easily beaten.

Rodgers called the decision a 'travesty' and is considering an appeal.

'I've not done anything wrong with my horses. It was a preconceived result today. It's been a witch hunt and there had to be a scapegoat,' he said. 'A lot of people think the only way you can be successful in racing is through cheating and skullduggery. I've done neither of those.'
