State Officials vote yes to online wagering
Friday 5th March 2004
Washington looks to be the next state to offer online and telephone wagering to its citizens after legislators approved a new bill this week proposing to allow residents to bet on horse racing through state approved Internet sites. Concerned that Washington is losing valuable tax revenue to off shore sites which they simply can’t police, the House of Representatives voted 79-17 in favour of the Bill which now goes to the Senate where it is expected to be approved.
Under the new proposals, punters will be able to open accounts which they can access over the Internet or telephone. They can then place bets without having to be at the track or of the existing state approved betting facilities. Emerald Downs, Washington’s best-known racetrack, welcomed the move, claiming that significant revenue had been lost in recent years to illegal betting operations.
