PPA elects Patrick Fleming

Attorney behind grassroots organisation’s Litigation Support Network has been named as the latest member of its Board of Directors.

Friday 29th October 2010

In America, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) political advocacy group has announced that Patrick Fleming has been elected by a near unanimous vote to serve as the latest member of its Board of Directors. An attorney with his own private practice in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Fleming specialises in criminal defence and civil rights litigation and also serves as Director for the PPA’s Litigation Support Network “Patrick is one of the poker community's staunchest champions and donates his time and legal expertise to help PPA members navigate the often murky waters regarding poker's legal status,” said former Senator Alfonse D'Amato, Chairman for the PPA. “I am so pleased that he will be joining the Board of Directors as we work together to guide the organisation's efforts to provide a safe, regulated environment for poker players in the United States.” After being taught the game of poker in his teenage years by his father, Fleming played throughout his college and law school years before discovering the game online in 2004 and competing under the screen name ‘skallagrim’. Dismayed at the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006, he joined the PPA and began leveraging his expertise in order to give advice on various poker forums. In 2008, Fleming suggested that the PPA create the Litigation Support Network in order to assist members that may have found themselves confronted with legal issues regarding the playing of poker. This organisation also provided the basic framework to advance the skill argument for use in future court cases. “Without Patrick's guidance and expertise, the PPA would not be nearly as well positioned from a legal perspective to provide support and testimony in the legal cases impacting poker across the nation,” said John Pappas, Executive Director for the PPA. “Just as importantly, our members would not have the Litigation Support Network, which is an invaluable resource to protect players as they enjoy a game of Texas hold‘em at home, online or at a charity event. “It is a true pleasure to work with Patrick and I look forward to the ideas and insights I am certain he will bring in his role on the Board Of Directors.”
