England tipped for victory

After defeating Australia earlier this week to retain the Ashes, the tourists are now fancied to win the fifth and final Test in Sydney.

Thursday 30th December 2010

After defeating Australia on Wednesday to retain the Ashes, numerous online bookmakers are listing England as favourite to defeat their hosts in the fifth and final Test set to begin on January 3 in Sydney. The Ashes is one of international cricket’s most celebrated test series and dates back to 1882 when Australia unexpectedly defeated England in London. The 66th edition of the biennial five match series got underway from The Gabba in Brisbane on November 25 and saw the two sides thrash out a draw. England came out on top eight days later after taking the second Test in Adelaide by an innings and 71 runs only to capitulate 13 days later to lose by 267 runs in Perth. However, England rallied in Melbourne beginning on Boxing Day to eventually defeat Australia by an innings and 157 runs and now move on to the famous Sydney Cricket Ground in hopes of taking the fifth encounter. The fifth five-day Test is scheduled to begin on January 3 and VictorChandler.com currently lists England at odds of 5/4 to defeat Australia in advance of SkyBet.com and BoyleSports.com with 11/8. England won the previous Ashes series on home soil after defeating Australia by two Tests to one with two draws in 2009 and Coral.co.uk, SportingBet.com and StanJames.com has the tourists at odds of 7/5 to taste victory in the fifth encounter. However, England has not managed to win an Ashes series over Australia ‘down under’ since 1987, which has prompted bet365.com, BlueSq.com, WilliamHill.com, BetFred.com, 888Sport.com and Bodog.com to offer longer odds of 6/4 on the visitors winning a majority of the five matches while BetDaq.com and Betfair.com show 163/100 before 32RedBet.com with 48/29. The Australian test cricket team is currently in transition and has dropped to fifth in the world rankings, just behind England in fourth, after dominating for much of the previous decade. Although it lost the previous Ashes series in England, the Aussie side stood out during the 2006/07 tournament at home by winning all five matches. WilliamHill.com, BlueSq.com and 888Sport.com show Australia at odds of 2/1 to defeat England in the fifth Test while Bodog.com, SkyBet.com, StanJames.com, SportingBet.com and BoyleSports.com are going for 9/4. Slightly longer, Betfair.com and BetDaq.com gave the home side at odds of 57/25 to win the fifth Test followed by 32RedBet.com, VictorChandler.com and Bet365.com with 23/10 and BetFred.com and Coral.co.uk showing 12/5. The Ashes could also end as it began with the fifth Test finishing in a draw, which is an eventuality Coral.co.uk, Bodog.com, StanJames.com and BetFred.com are listing at odds of 7/4 while BetDaq.com and Betfair.com currently show 179/100. Similarly, 32RedBet.com has the fifth meeting finishing is a tie at odds of 20/11 while punters can get 15/8 from BlueSq.com, 888Sport.com, SkyBet.com, BoyleSports.com, SportingBet.com, WilliamHill.com and VictorChandler.com before bet365.com with 19/10.
