The King’s Speech tipped for Oscar glory

Film recounting the struggles of King George VI is being offered at very short odds to win the Best Picture prize at this weekend’s Academy Awards.

Friday 25th February 2011

The 83rd edition of the Academy Awards are set to take place this Sunday from Hollywood and The King’s Speech starring English actor Colin Firth is being offered at very short odds to walk away with the much coveted Best Picture prize. The King’s Speech was written by David Seidler and tells the story of King George VI and his struggles at overcoming a stutter following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII with the assistance of Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. StanJames.com has the 2010 film directed by Tom Hooper at odds of 1/10 to win the Oscar while Intertops.com is going for 3/25. Slightly longer, bettors can get odds of 1/7 from Coral.co.uk on The King’s Speech being voted as the best film of the last twelve months while BlueSq.com, SkyBet.com, VictorChandler.com, PaddyPower.com, Bodog.com and 888Sport.com show 1/6. Similarly, ExtraBet.com is currently offering odds of 2/11 that The King’s Speech will overcome its nine rivals to be crowned Best Picture before BoyleSports.com, UniBet.com and WilliamHill.com with 1/5 and Bwin.com and BetFred.com listing 2/9. At the far end of the spectrum, 32RedBet.com has odds of 3/13 that The King’s Speech will win the Oscar statuette before BetDaq.com with 6/25, Bet365.com and SportingBet.com listing 1/4 and Betfair.com offering 7/25. The closest runner to The King’s Speech for the Best Picture prize is seemingly The Social Network, which is a biographical drama recounting the founding of the Facebook social networking website and the many resulting lawsuits. The film was directed by David Fincher and features an ensemble cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake. SportingBet.com has the 2010 film at odds of 3/1 to win the Best Picture accolade at the Academy Awards while WilliamHill.com, Intertops.com, 888Sport.com, BlueSq.com, BoyleSports.com and ExtraBet.com currently list 7/2. A bit longer, BetDaq.com has The Social Network at odds of 19/5 to win in Hollywood this weekend before Coral.co.uk, Bwin.com, VictorChandler.com, Bet365.com, UniBet.com, PaddyPower.com, BetFred.com, Bodog.com, SkyBet.com and StanJames.com with 4/1 and Betfair.com listing 43/10.
